‘People driven, ICT empowered’

Services innovation in the creative and financial sector

70% of the Netherlands’ gross national product and virtually its entire employment growth over the past ten years are down to the country’s service sector. But the sector is changing fast, in particular due to the liberalisation of markets and the influence of new technology. Companies and institutions are faced with enormous changes in behaviour on the part of consumers in the digital era. Citizens and consumers have the technology to actively create value in society. Moreover, ICT is playing a driving and disruptive role regarding innovation in products, services and earnings models. Companies and institutions in the key creative and financial industries have therefore joined forces in the programme ‘Services innovation in the creative and financial sector'.

Creative industry

The creative industry is focusing on the growth area of creativity & ICT. The collective ambition is to turn the Netherlands into the European Hub for Smart Content, Experiences and Connectedness. Information, communication and media form the heart of these products and services. The sector is aiming to enrich them with invisible and intuitive technology. After all, the new consumer is changing: interactivity and personalised services are crucial to meeting consumer desires. Connecting the three now mostly separate 'worlds’ of small and medium-sized creative companies, creative manufacturing industry and top knowledge institutions will generate opportunities for economic growth and innovation.

Financial logistics

Within the financial sector, financial logistics are a spearhead on the innovation agenda of the Holland Financial Centre. The ambition is to turn the Netherlands into the international centre of excellence in the field, and to achieve the most efficient processing of value messages and the greatest added value in financial logistics services, in turn leading to strong economic growth and a reduction in administrative burdens.

The aims in both fields closely match the Portal to Europe positioning chosen by the Innovation Platform for the Netherlands and the ambition of securing the global top spot for the Netherlands as a creative economy. Achieving these aims could have a big impact in other fields. For example, different technology and service concepts can quickly find their way into other sectors, both in manufacturing and services.

In total, over 50 companies have now joined this initiative. This means they not only invest independently, they also act together because of the added value this offers them. That added value comes from joint research efforts, but also from joint promotion, standardisation, infrastructure development, training and a collective approach to the labour market.
