Many Dutch cities are struggling with pressure from increasing traffic. The big challenge is to keep traffic congestion at bay, meanwhile creating a healthy environment. Investments in asphalt, intelligent traffic management systems or smart cars are only part of the solution. The solution starts with the commuter himself by enticing motorists to change their behavior. Changes in infrastructure are time consuming and expensive. People on the other hand can be encouraged to alter their choice of transportation.
Change through personalized information
ICT can be used to entice people into more sustainable travel behavior. By providing personalized information and special offers a certain behavior can be stimulated, for instance by giving sound advice on the best time of departure or alternative transportation. Given the right incentives, the individual can be swayed to use alternative and more sustainable ways of reaching its destination.
